Josh Hayes takes Toyota 200 Warm-up
2003 Toyota 200 winner Josh Hayes returned to Willow Springs for the first time since April and walked away with top honors in three classes including the featured Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula One.

Early in the race, F-1 points leader, Jeremy Toye provided Hayes some serious competition, but by mid-race Toye’s bike was clearly having problems and Toye rode the rig into the dirt in Turn One as the front end gave way. From that point on, Hayes had a free ride home, receiving the checkered several seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

Placing second, Robbie Dowie (WSMC# 2) has assumed the points lead in Formula One class competition. His strong double point finish brought him up two places, edging out Toye by a single point. It was his second consecutive podium finish and his 5th big finish of the 2004 season.
Perhaps the most interesting battles of the day took place in the midst of the field where two heated battles were waged continuously. Chris Siglin (#488) and Jacob West (#86) fought tooth and nail throughout the race, initially for 4th place, and then for the last podium slot, when Toye was out of the running. Siglin with more horsepower and West with greater agility provided spectators with more than their money’s worth. In the final lap as they ran into lapped traffic, West found his way clear and maintained the distance to achieve third place, his best F-1 finish of the 2004 season.

Closer still was the fight that took place just a few bike lengths back, as Corey Eaton (#10) and Stephen Hewitt (#28) jockeyed for 6th and 7th just behind #1 plate holder, Jeff Stern. In a race that was simply too close to call, officials awarded both Eaton and Hewitt with 6th place honors, splitting the points evenly between the two competitors. Stern was awarded 5th.

Rounding out the top ten finishers were Richard Headley (#90) in 8th, Ruben Munoz Jr. in 9th and John Chen in 10th place. All top ten finishers qualify for the Toyota Tundra drawing that will be awarded to one lucky rider at the end of the season.
Palazzo Strengthens Position,
Landers Loses Ground in
Last Double Points Outing
August’s double points weekend provided racers a chance to adjust the gap between competitors as the West’s best roadracers lined up to compete under the hot August sun. Mark Palazzo (#211) regained his momentum after a rocky weekend last month gaining 90 points with three first place finishes, topping 500 points for the season. Will Eikenberry (#87) ousted Stoney Landers (#3) from the second slot as Landers sat the weekend out after taking a tumble earlier in the month at Buttonwillow. Current # 1 plate holder Jeff Stern moved in to third place overall followed by Sam Carnibucci (#8), Robbie Dowie (#2) and Clinton Whitehouse. (#9) Landers existing 355 points were enough to keep him in the top ten, despite his absence, he landed solidly in 7th place followed by Skye Girard, (#62) JC Gibbs (#9) and Blair Sullenger (#326). With a DNF in the Toyota Cup F-1, Jeremy Toye not only felt the discomfort of his midrace mishap but also found his ego bruised a bit as he was bounced off the leader board into 12th place.
