Track: Streets of Willow Springs

Who we are – What we’re about!

The Porsche Owners Club has programs to take you as far as you want to go with your car! We offer the tracks, the instructors and the experience to show you how to get more from yourself and your Porsche. You’ll be on a dedicated race track, no dogs, cats or unpredictable situations. You’ll have an experienced Porsche driver as your personal instructor helping you develop your skills at YOUR pace. In one weekend, you’ll grow to appreciate the remarkable handling ability of your car and you’ll control it as never before.

The POC Performance Driving Series (formerly known as Short Track Series) is our entry level series where you can compete for fastest lap times. No banging and bumping, just you and your car against the clock. No cone courses here! We offer continuous lapping under the guidance of experienced, safety conscious event managers.

The POC Time Trial Series is the next step. Visit tracks all over California and beyond. Take your skills to an even higher level.

The POC Cup Racing Series is wheel to wheel racing on these same “big” tracks. Compete against drivers with similar skills and equipment.

Performance Driving Series

The POC Performance Driving Series offers club members the opportunity to learn the performance limits of their car in a safe, legal, controlled environment. One and two day events are conducted at the Streets of Willow, a lower-speed but technical track with generous runoff areas. Continuous timed lapping using our AMB Timing System allows drivers to monitor their progress while exploring their understanding of smooth driving lines and car control abilities. A relaxed atmosphere, with experienced instruction available and lots of track time have made these events a sellout every event this year.

As this is our introductory series, we have a complete guideline on what to expect at the PDS on our website homepage: www.porscheownerclub.org. For those who wish to compete in timed laps against others in the same class, this also serves as a Championship series with year-end awards for class winners. After you have completed four full days at the PDS, including one PDS school, described below, and have received four instructor signoffs (as well as the approval of the Chief Driving Instructor), you are eligible for a PDS license. A PDS license allows you to compete in all Short Track events.

POC sponsored one day driving schools are held twice a year at the Streets of Willow at Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond, CA, providing you with classroom instruction, skidpad experience, a track walk with knowledgeable and experienced instructors as well as in-car instruction and practice time in a noncompetitive environment.

Time Trial Series

This is the next step up the POC ladder. Like the PDS series, practices have limited controlled passing but where this series differs is that on Sunday of the race weekend, you go solo! Solo Sprint events are held on the famous tracks of the west: Willow Springs International Raceway, California Speedway, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow Raceway Park, Las Vegas Motor Speedway and others. Due to the demand for a higher skill level, a PDS license must first be obtained before moving up to the Solo Sprint series. Some additional safety equipment is required at this level. To receive your Solo Sprint license, you will need to successfully complete two full Solo Sprint events (four full days), as a student and receive signoffs from your instructors and the Chief Driving Instructor. There is no additional cost for instruction. Students run in the Yellow or White groups generally with an instructor (at some venues, White and Yellow groups are combined). On Sunday afternoon, all participants, including students if they wish, may run for time in a session which is carefully organized so that drivers don’t have to contend with traffic. Much like the qualifying at Indianapolis or Formula One, you have only two “flying” laps to achieve your best time. Solo Sprints help develop the mental skills required to put together that “perfect lap”. Many of our experienced racers utilize this Solo Sprint discipline as a part of their continuing race prep program and for the opportunity to set new track records! This is also a Championship Series.

Most members are more than happy to help newcomers understand all that is involved in making the transition from the PDS to the “big track” both prior to and at the event – just ask!

Cup Racing Series

You want more? OK, this is it – the POC Cup Racing Series. Although characterized by its highly competitive wheel-to-wheel action, the Cup Racing Series follows the standard of “gentlemen racing” 13/13 non-contact sportsmanship.

POC Cup Racing, with its tiered class structure, allows cars from the most radical tube chassis prototypes to relatively stock 4 cylinder street cars. This is a Championship Series with year-end awards.

After you have six Solo Sprint events (and six instructor signoffs) under your belt, you may apply to our Cup Racing Clinic. The POC has two Cup Racing Clinics per year and you must successfully complete two clinics before you earn your rookie license. Several veteran POC members (many of whom have recent professional Porsche race experience) give back to the club by teaching the next generation of racers the basic and intermediate skills needed to comfortably drive side by side in real competition. Driving nuances, driver-to-driver trust, race start techniques and recognizing passing opportunities are all skills that our members take away from our Cup Racing Clinics. Over and over, we hear that our Cup Racing Clinic is the highlight of our member’s driving career to date. There is no club that offers this level of instruction!

Why We’re Here!

Above all, the spirit of friendship prevails throughout the club. Every event brings opportunities to meet new people and listen to tall tales of races past. A history of mentorship is a key factor in the quality of drivers that develop year after year. Over our 51 year history, a wealth of renowned drivers such as: Allan Johnson, George Follmer, Davy Jones, Otis Chandler, Cort Wagner, Craig Stanton, Patrick Long, to name a very few, have influenced the POC experience.

Many generations of family members have enjoyed our events. Spouses, significant others, kids and friends are welcome and they can even participate in non-driving, volunteer track tasks if they so desire. Many couples share the passion and some have been known to compete with one another! Whether you choose to stay at the Short Track, race the clock with the Solo Sprint series or go wheel-to-wheel racing, if you’re a Porsche enthusiast, there’s a place for you here.

Every January, we have our annual Awards Banquet, complete with terrific trophies and an opportunity to see how well we “clean up” for a nice social event.

In a nutshell, we’re very proud of the organized, smoothly run and focus on safety at POC managed events, our reputation for producing top-notch drivers, both at the club and professional level, and primarily, the overall enhancement of the experience of owning a Porsche.
